African Americans in society
Legislators - many "blacks" who held office were educated property holders who took moderate positions. many southerners and democrats were unsettled by the fact that there were black men in powerful positions. (legislators are shown in picture at left)
Apprentices - most black men found work under white men as apprentices or learners making less money than their employers. Many blacks thought that they should receive equal pay.
Segregation - Segregation is the separation of people into racial groups in daily life. During the reconstruction, black people were often segregated, going to different schools, working differently with less pay, and even simpler things like having to go to different restaurants.
