Election of 1872
Reform-minded Republicans selected Horace Greeley as a candidate. The liberal Republicans wanted civil service reform, withdrawal of troops from the south and an end to railroad subsidies. To the surprise of many, the Democrats also nominated Greeley. The regular Republicans merely retaliated by reminding the public of the war, gaining support. Grant was reelected, and weeks later Greeley died.
