Election of 1876
By 1876, troop had been withdrawn from all but South Carolina , Florida and Louisianan. The Democrats were dominantly in power, which proved a key factor in the election. They chose Rutherford B. Hayes, who was supposed to be untouched by corruption. Tilden won the popular vote and so was expected to take the presidency. However Hayes won the electoral election, which never has never happened before. The two parties fought for a reasonable compromise.
