Finally the two parties settled on a deal. Hayes was decided to become president, but he would have to agree to two conditions:
1: Immediately end federal support for the Republicans in the south.
2: Support the building of a southern transcontinental railroad.
Hayes fulfilled the compromise, withdrawing federal troops and supporting blacks and other Republicans.
